Dunstable building's long awaited restoration

Long awaited repair work has now begun on a building in Dunstable that was dangerous to the public.

Number 5 High Street South, on the cross roads in Dunstable, has had scaffolding on it while Central Bedfordshire Council has traced the owner of the building to carry out repairs.

The council's efforts to get the owner to repair the building have been difficult, but after protracted negotiations and legal difficulties, contractors appointed by the owners of the building have begin extensive repairs.

The works are expected to take some weeks to complete and will include rebuilding of several parts of the building.

Cllr Brian Spurr, Executive Member for Sustainable Communities, Services, said: "This has been a long, hard process but our Building Control team's tenacity has ensured that this building will be restored. It has been a real safety issue and eyesore for Dunstable's residents and we are delighted that our hard work has paid off and the work has begun."

Central Bedfordshire Council PR 1074

Investing in Dunstable's future, making it a better place to live and work.

The Court Drive Scheme started on the 26th June 2012 and will continue for some weeks yet. Unfortunately there will be quite a lot of disruption however everyone involved in this scheme are doing there best to make travelling around this area as as easy as they can along with supporting all businesses within the area.
The site team (Including Ben Gadsby) will be based out of the Magistrates Court on Court Drive for the duration of works, this will help to ensure that construction is carried out with as little disruption as possible.

Many of you are aware of the scheme but as a reminder they are proposing to:

  1. Enhance the street scene – using colour gravel finishes on the highway to define different areas of the street, raised carriageway, minimised street clutter, widened footways, several wide flush crossings on existing desire lines and scheme wide landscaping incorporating up to 14no new Silver Birch Trees.
  2. Lower speed limits - 20mph speed limit along the entire length of Court Drive and surrounding residential streets.
  3. Modern low energy street lighting – All street lighting will be replaced with modern lighting columns with back lighting to footways.
  4. 7.5 tonne weight limit (except for deliveries) – All Heavy goods vehicles will now serve the area via College Drive.
  5. Improved public transport - dedicated bus lane with modern shelter and real time information which will become part of the Luton-Dunstable-Houghton Regis busway.
More information about the ongoing work can be found at http://www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/CourtDrive
Progress updates will be posted on this webpage as well as on Twitter (@letstalkcentralFacebook (search ‘Let’s Talk Central’).
The public will be able to contact the site team at courtdrive@amey.co.uk
