The Queen's reign the Diamond Jubilee

Let's get ready to party in the streets to celebrate The Queen's reign the Diamond Jubilee

To mark 60 years of The Queen's reign the Diamond Jubilee in June will see communities across the country celebrating in great British tradition by hanging out the bunting and holding a street party.

The celebrations will centre around an extended weekend on 2, 3, 4 and 5 June, and those party organisers are advised to get their traffic road closure orders in early.

To make the process of organising a street party as easy as possible, Central Bedfordshire Council has made a traffic order to cover the whole district meaning that charges usually paid by organisers will instead be covered by the council.

Cllr Brian Spurr, Executive Member for Sustainable Communities Services at Central Bedfordshire Council, said: "We are asking people who organise a street party to get in contact with us and tell us what roads they would like to close, and how long they will be closed for. There are some circumstances where an application would need to be made, but the sooner people get in touch, the quicker we can get the ball rolling.

“We want to make sure all residents can enjoy the celebrations and one way of ensuring this and making organisers jobs a lot easier is to cut the amount of 'red tape' that can surround such events.”

Organisers should complete an application form which is available from www.communities.gov.uk/publications/communities/streetpartyguide, and send it back to the council by 1 May. If you need further advice about road closures then you can call 0300 300 8308.

HM Government e-petition ~ "Do not merge Dunstable with Luton North Constituency

If the new Boundary Commission plan goes ahead then residents in Dunstable, whilst remaining within the boundaries of Central Bedfordshire, will have to elect an MP whose main constituency will be in Luton North. Dunstable is a market town and has affiliations with many of its surrounding villages - Luton is a large urban area with aspirations to become a city and as such does not fit well with a market town. Please support this petition to allow Dunstable to remain in the South West Bedfordshire Constituency. Central Bedfordshire Council have laid out the reasoning in their submission which Dunstable Town Council also fully supports. This can be found on Central Bedfordshire website under the full Council Meeting dated 24th November 2011 - item number 51.

If you support the petition "Do not merge Dunstable with Luton North Constituency" Please click on the link below ~ sign it and share the link to get as many signatures as possible ~ Thank you.

Houghton Regis ~ Dunstable ~ Luton Busway

Stakeholder Briefing Session
16th January 2012

Having been invited to the above event today it very interesting to hear from the many people involved in the above mentioned busway.

Although this busway has proved to be a bone of contention for many, it is here, it will stay and after hearing from all parties involved today it will hopefully prove to be a real asset to the people of our town for many reasons.

While the busway is under construction it has lead to thirteen new businesses along its route, around one and half million pounds have been invested in these. New businesses lead to an increase in employment and with immediate access to the busway hopefully employment for local people here in Dunstable.

Some investment has come from a large development of about seven thousand houses to the north of Houghton Regis which will house approximately seventeen and a half thousand people. With this comes funding for the Woodside Link Road, which in turn means more businesses will want to establish themselves in the Dunstable Industrial unit. More businesses more employment.

Since the busway has begun to be established there has been an increase to 86% occupancy of shops in Dunstable not withstanding the problems with occupancy in the Quadrant Shopping Centre.

More interest in the town is shown in the re development of the Dukeminster Estate. This area has been falling in to decline for some years. A developer is now interested and is seeking planning permission for housing, care home facilities, business and small retail unit.

There is talk, which has even been in the news today of increasing the capacity of Luton Airport and for every one million travellers they need to employ seven hundred and fifty thousand people. You could live in Dunstable and travel to the Airport to work without taking your car.

This will be the fourth longest busway in the world and with the busway being not only on budget but showing at the moment to be making possible savings of four million pounds, it is also slightly in front for completion. I believe we all to a certain degree will remain scepitcal until we see how this new busway works and not in a selfish way but as a resident of Dunstable to Dunstable's advantage we shall wait with anticipation to it's opening Easter of 2013 or possibly earlier to see how it develops. Hopefully we can all look forward positively to the busway as it continues to attract many new investors to our town of Dunstable.

While I took notes to relay this information to you, it is correct to the best of my knowledge ~ I hope you see it as positive news about the Houghton Regis ~ Dunstable ~ Luton Busway. For more detailed information please contact Central Bedfordshire Council in the first instance who will be able to guide you to the correct areas for specific queries.

Today 'About Dunstable' welcomes Dunstable Town Council in to this big new Social Media World and believes that it will help spread an even bigger wave of positivity across our much loved Historical town

Dunstable Town Council has today launched it's new Facebook page with Twitter accounts from the following areas ~ Priory House ~ Events ~ Town Centre and Businesses ~ Creasey Park Community Football Centre.

Social networking brings with it a number of positive outcomes, it reaches new audiences (often those who do not usually engage with the Council), it can help disperse the perception of poor communication and encourage positive two way communications.

Social networking is also effective at promoting events, undertaking researchm sharing information as there is already a massive audience potential.
